glensaul valley Tourmakeady

A force that changed the landscape in the Glensaul Valley (in Tourmakeady) was a falling meteorite that struck millions of years ago. This left a crater that is a major characteristic of the area.

Evidence of this impact can be found in the pyrites found in the soil – this is not a rock that is found on Earth, so it must have come from outer space. This makes the area especially interesting for geological studies. The majority of the rock found in the area is quartzite and sandstone. This rock would have formed in the Ordovician Period by igneous activity .
